In December 2008 the Melbourne Disc Golf Club was founded to create a local community of players and to spread awareness of this great sport. It is a not-for-profit organisation, encouraging people to take part in this enjoyable, challenging and environmentally responsible sport.
The MDGC meet on the third Sunday of every month for their league day. On this day, all skill levels and non-members are very welcome to come along and play disc golf. Details of our next event can be found in the League Season section of our website. The level of competativeness is totally up you. The player's skill levels on league days are leveled out by the use of a handicap system, giving everyone an even chance to compete for prizes. Players will also accumulate league points with the chance to win further prizes at the end of the biannual league. At a cost of $5.00 per day for non-members or the option of annual membership, disc golf is a very low-cost way to enjoy the outdoors. There are discs to borrow, free of charge, for anyone that doesn't own equipment.
Club members regularly travel to compete in various Australian tour tournaments, and a yearly "Ryder Cup" style, (relatively) friendly competition between the Melbourne Disc Golf Club and the Geelong Disc Golf Club. We also hold "come and try" open days and social events.

Disc Golf is one of the fastest growing sports in the world, originating in the US in the 70's and having been played in Australia since the early 80's. Disc golf, best described as Frisbee golf, is a fun, inexpensive, healthy and environmentally friendly game that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities, male and female, regardless of economic status.
It is played much like traditional golf; only instead of hitting a ball into a hole you throw a Frisbee into an elevated metal basket. As players progress from the “tee” to the “target,” the trees, shrubs and terrain changes provide challenging obstacles. Ultimately, the “putt” is tossed into the basket and the hole is completed. The goal of disc golf is the same as traditional golf: to complete the course in the fewest number of shots. Disc golf shares the same joys and frustrations of traditional golf, whether it's nailing a long putt, sinking an "ace" (hole in one) or hitting a tree halfway down the fairway.
As in “ball golf,” a typical course will have 9 or 18 holes, but each hole only averages between 50 and 150 metres. The target in disc golf is a metal basket that is mounted vertically about a metre off the ground, attached to a pole that is around 1.6m tall. To better allow discs to come to rest in this basket, chains are suspended from another circular section near the top of the pole and allowed to hang to a point where they are connected to the pole in or near the receiving basket.

GDGC'S CASSIE ANDERSON DRIVES UP HIGHWAY TO TAKE MAY PRIZE
20 May 2012 - Geelong's Cassie Anderson threw a blinding personal best of 60 around Price Park today to claim top points in the May 2012 MDGC League Day. The net 48 round was completed in seasonally-unlikely perfect conditions, with the sun watching the round intently while the wind chose to spend time elsewhere today, with Ari Taylor the shortest of margins behind with a great net 49. It was also great to see some new faces, including Roger Lamb who threw a perfect tee shot on 15 only to see the disc jump out of the basket like a frog off a lily-pad. Our rapidly growing ace pool was nearly taken away by a first time visitor to our club. Full results here.
VICOPEN IS ONCE AGAIN A HUGE SUCCESS
17 May 2012 - A week out from the Victorian Disc Golf open, tournament directors Greg Bowers and Andrew Ferguson were watching the Melbourne weather forecast with a grim understanding; this tournament was going ahead come rain, hail or shine… In a sure sign God had thrown a Frisbee or two in his younger days, a genuine miracle occurred and not a single drop of rain fell on the forty odd competitors over the entire weekend, despite the bureau’s constant predictions of foul weather. Even the wind (rarely a disc golfer’s friend), behaved as if divine intervention was playing its part.
The Victorian Disc Golf Open is one of six A-Tier disc golf tournaments played in Australia annually, and has already developed a reputation as the finest. It attracts regional, interstate and international players of the highest calibre, and the 2012 open was no exception, with more than forty registered competitors lining up as the first disc was thrown.
At 6.30am on Saturday morning, heavy dew blanketed the blades of buffalo grass and dark clouds were hovering menacingly low… But by the time eighteen hardened steel baskets were placed strategically throughout Ruffey Lake Park, the fairways were surprisingly dry underfoot. By 9.30am, Ruffey Lake had been transformed into one of the longest and perhaps most challenging disc golf courses in Australia and unbelievably, the sky had cleared! Despite the transformation, few – if any of the local park users would have been aware of what was taking place alongside the regular groups of dog walkers, joggers and cyclists, just one of the beautiful attractions of disc golf. It really is a ‘natural environment’ sport, requiring no manicured greens, mown fairways or expansive level ground to be enjoyed.
The course designers had tweaked a few holes since the Open was last played here back in 2010, and it was obvious they were aiming to test the arms of the entrants. Nicknamed ‘The Monster’, hole seven stretched over 300m sloping gently downhill toward the creek, while on the back nine, hole sixteen was so long, the basket was just a speck on the horizon, if your eyesight was good enough to make it out from the tee. Plenty of Ruffey Lake’s signature holes made up the middle, with long avenues of Cyprus pines, Tea Tree and Oaks providing no relief for a wayward throw. Despite the length of over 3000m – precision was just as important, with island holes, mandatory lines and some ridiculously deep grass to contend with.
The Men's Open division is what the punters come to see, and competition at the top was fierce. Chris Finn (WA) took out the Open trophy, but only after it went to a play off with Bryan Motley (QLD). They both finished on 210 upon completion of the final round, but it only took one wayward putt from Motley to hand Finn the title. The closing putts of the final can be seen in this video.
Luke Williams (NSW) and Josh Smith (NZ) had a tight wrangle for third, but Josh proved too consistent for Luke in the end. Richard Sampson (TAS) edged out Rick Kapalko (QLD) by two shots for fifth place. Neil Roberts (NSW) tidied up nicely for seventh. Andrew Ferguson (VIC) and Paul Arden (VIC) fought hard for the locals but the visitors dominated.
In an incredible turnaround at the top of the Men's Advanced leader board, David Barclay finished the afternoon on Saturday with a white hot 9 under 58. This left a group of three tied on 132 to battle it out in the final round on Sunday. In the end, David kept his form and posted a 6 under 61 to beat Joel Paton (VIC) and Brian Clevenger (QLD) for the Advanced title.
Cassie Anderson (VIC) continued her winning streak taking out the Women's Advanced title and Bruce McNaughton (QLD) maintained his dominance winning the Advanced Grandmasters division.
In the recreational division, Ben Wilkinson (VIC) took a healthy lead into the final round and ended up winning by 14 shots. In one of the best turnouts ever for the Junior Boys trophy, the naturally talented and wonderfully groomed William Richardson (TAS) did his disc golfing parents proud and brought the win home for the Apple Isle.
All in all, this year's VicOpen will leave many favorable and lasting memories on the minds of participants. Importantly, it will also leave a very positive impression on the spectators, both deliberate and inadvertent who, as always, initiated numerous conversations as passers by stopped to admire the smooth arc of a Frisbee deep into its flight, occasionally baffled by the seriousness with which an avid disc golfer will treat the game.
Congratulations to everyone who played, and the feedback from the players and locals has been fantastic. Big props go to the Melbourne and Geelong Disc Golf Clubs who put hundreds of combined hours in to getting this tournament off without a hitch. Both Greg Bowers and Andrew Ferguson deserve all the praise they get for yet another brilliantly directed Victorian Disc Golf Open.
Finally, the biggest thanks of all go to Manningham City Council, for allowing the stunningly beautiful and impeccably kept Ruffey Lake Park to host the Victorian Disc Golf Open for the third time. Not only did the course live up to all expectations, the public users of the park also got a real kick out of seeing great players from around the country participate in this exciting sport.
