Affordable Participation

At a time when the cost of participation has made many recreational activities inaccessible, disc golf is a breath of fresh air. Over 90% of disc golf course are designed to be free to the public and open year-round.

The only equipment needed is a disc which costs around $20 and can be used over and over again. A three disc beginner set is easily purchased for around $40 with this equipment likely to not need replacing for quite some time. The disc golf course will serve a broad section of the community. The game is extremely easy to learn and the course can be played in around an hour.

Meeting Recreational Needs

Disc golf is one of the most rapidly growing sports in the world. There are now more than 2000 disc golf courses in the United States alone, nearly all installed by city and county parks departments, with two thirds established over the last five years. Councils have found that there are few recreational activities that offer the high benefit-to-cost ratio of Disc Golf.

A Disc Golf course in your local park will provide an inexpensive form of recreation for people of all age and skill levels and be a welcome addition to the existing park facilities.

Respecting the Environment

Disc golf is a uniquely environmentally friendly sport. Unlike a traditional golf course, a disc golf course does not require any alteration of the existing landscape, watering or additional mowing. Rather, the course utilizes the already existing landscape of the park. The course will not be obtrusive. The visual impact of a disc golf course on the surrounding area is also minimal: the tees are level with the ground and are visible only from a short distance away, while the baskets are a dull metal and do not stand out, with most being positioned in the trees, blending into their surroundings.

This was a very innovative proposal to my Dutton Park Ward Liveability Committee – and the committee was more than happy to help make this happen, Disc Golf is a new and healthy sporting activity perfectly suited to the Brisbane lifestyle, combining the fun of throwing a Frisbee with the challenges of golf. It’s a fun, low-cost, low-impact sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities. We hope to attract players from all over Brisbane when the course is opened in the new year.
